In G3 and G3.5 Sweetie Belle is a main character. She's still a filly, and retains most of her colours going into G4.
Personally I like the manes and tail styles of G3.5 characters more, it plays more like hair on humans since it usually flows down towards the neckline. It just looks prettier, but that's just my two cents.
